The latest International Visitor Survey (IVS) for Papua New Guinea (PNG) reveals significant insights into the nation’s tourism growth and visitor experiences for 2024.

This annual survey, conducted by the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) in collaboration with the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), provides valuable data on visitor demographics, spending habits, and satisfaction levels.

These findings are critical for shaping future tourism strategies and enhancing PNG’s appeal as a top travel destination.

Visitor Demographics and Spending Patterns

The 2024 IVS gathered data from 3,701 international visitors, with 42% being first-time travelers to PNG. The survey found that Australia represented the largest visitor source market, accounting for 39% of arrivals, followed by Asia at 35% and Europe at 8%.

The predominant age group of visitors was between 40-59 years old. Additionally, the survey revealed that 48% of visitors traveled to PNG for business, while 23% came for leisure and 18% for visiting friends and family.

In terms of spending, the average prepaid expenditure per visitor was USD 2,613, with 65% (USD 1,699) contributing directly to the local economy.

The average in-country spending per trip was USD 1,385, with visitors staying an average of 10.2 nights. Overall, international visitors contributed USD 309 million to PNG’s economy, marking a 9% increase compared to the previous year.

Tourism Attractions and Visitor Satisfaction

Visitors cited nature, cultural heritage, business opportunities, and family visits as their primary motivations for traveling to PNG. Notably, World War II heritage sites were among the most popular attractions for historical tourism.

The survey indicated high levels of satisfaction, with a 4 out of 5 rating overall. An impressive 86% of respondents recommended PNG to others, and 89% expressed willingness to return.

However, there were areas for improvement. Visitors highlighted the need for enhanced safety, better infrastructure, cleaner public spaces, and improved domestic flight services as key factors that could elevate the overall tourism experience.

Implications for Future Tourism Growth

The findings from the 2024 IVS will help inform strategic planning for the tourism sector in PNG.

The TPA aims to leverage these insights to enhance visitor experiences, improve infrastructure, and develop targeted marketing strategies that resonate with key international markets.

As the country continues to build its tourism sector, maintaining a focus on sustainable growth and high-quality experiences will be vital for future success.
